A small tribute

I felt tremendously grateful to be in New York City on Thursday. The outpouring of love for Michael Jackson was tremendous. The Apollo still has a 24/7 tribute going for the King of Pop, and every radio station, car and party paid tribute in any way they could all weekend long. It was a beautiful recognition of MJ, from a city that knew him well. As people of all ages wrestled with the suddenness of his death, and argued with folks bent on balancing the brilliance of his gift with the troubles of his past, I saw the similarities between MJ and NYC. You can find fault in either, but they've both shaped the world in ways too powerful and amazing to ignore. R. I. P. Michael.

FSF NYC photoshoots

The FSF photoshoots in NYC were madness! Hours of traffic, late night subway rides, plenty of getting lost, and it all came out great. We hit the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan (uptown, downtown and Lower East Side!) and Brooklyn, including about 10 individual shoots and over 20 girls at the photobooth at the BBQ. Amanda Lopez, the official FSF photographer and collaborator on our book project (Girls Got Kicks), was amazing. Low light? Truck drivers trying to run her down? Need to double as clean up crew at the Q? She did it all! Here are just a few shots along the way...(from the times I remembered I had a camera too!) Many thanks to our subjects: Jae and her mom, Erica, Courtney, Toofly, Karina, Rashawn, JenOne, Fee, Jovi, and all the girls at the BBQ!

FSF BBQ...sweeeeeet!

Okay, the truth of the matter is I was too busy grilling and chilling (not to mention repping for the females on the bball court) to take pics, but here are a few I've found on other sites. Thanks to all the folks who came through, to Fee and Mike for phenomenal set up, to the whole FSF crew, to Amanda our tremendous photographer, to DJ Ill P who made the best of a bad situation with her sweet mixes, to Courtney from Milkshake Kicks who went on a MISSION for us, and to everyone who pitched in to make it a crazy throwdown that we'll have to do again! Cheers!

Easytone by Reebok

Reebok’s revolutionary EasyTone technology allows busy women to work their butt up to 28% more effectively than by wearing an ordinary sneaker, just by doing everyday activities like walking the dog or shopping. Reebok’s EasyTone sneaker effectively tones key butt and leg muscles by using advanced balance pods built into the shoe. The balance pods create natural instability with every step that a woman takes. The micro-instability forces muscles to adapt, and in doing so, they work harder. Reebok EasyTone is currently available on www.reebok.com and at key retailers Lady Foot Locker, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Nordstrom, and Sports Chalet.

FSF Welcomes 2 New Journalism Interns!

FSF is always looking for great writers, and this summer we're proud to announce our two newest journalism interns, Louise (aka Weezy) Hoffman from Norwich, London, and Ally Levine from Ithaca, NY. Louise will greatly increase our coverage of England and Europe, and Ally promises to improve our coverage of girls in the skate scene... But first I asked them to tell me a little bit about their take on being female sneaker fiends:

Weezy on being a FEMALE sneaker fiend:
It definitely is different, over here at least. It’s probably because there are less females rocking kicks than males. Most of the females in the UK are all about their heels or pumps. I have time for those too, but wearing what I want and not following the crowd makes me stand out, especially to men. Some like it, some hate it. But that’s what life is all about! Anyways, it’s always nice to be the only female who can still walk properly after a night out, and not end up stumbling about like a lame horse, or resorting to bare feet and getting tore up by broken glass.

Ally on recognizing who's a female sneaker fiend:
FSFs carry themselves with confidence and walk with swagger that others lack. For me, necessary capital-A-attitude distinguishes the role of any given female sneaker fiend. You can tell that they have a sense of pride about the kicks they’re wearing. And if they’re spotless, then you know they’ve got their toothbrush and Windex somewhere near their shoe rack. I know I do, ha-ha.

Damn, that's messed up!

Owner Robert Torres standing outside of Holy Grail

Vintage sneaker boutique Holy Grail was looted after the LA Lakers won the Finals. Twenty pairs of shoes were left out of 800; two computers, cash, sunglasses and hats were also looted. Robert Torres, owner of Holy Grail, was obviously upset, and said "It makes me not want to be a basketball fan." "I thought it would be a whole different reaction. Usually after the games we get a real positive response." The damages add up to $140,000. Luckily Torres has insurance and it will cover it. According to Torres, some of the vintage sneakers are irreplaceable, but he hopes to re-open Holy Grail at the end of the week. They have already arrested two people who live in the same building after finding six boxes of shoes in their apartment.

People don't know how to act!! It's one thing to celebrate, and it's another to loot. All I have to say is keep your head up Robert things will work themselves out.

More AF1 Releases: Snake Skin Edition

So we had polka dot, now we have snake skin. Yellow and sliver are the only two colorways in these and they are not out in the states yet. Even though this is not the first time that Nike has used snake skin, in my opinion the print does not work well especially the yellow ones. For our fiends that live in Japan, if you feeling them you can get them at Rakuten . Don't know what the release date for everywhere else.
