j shoes co-lab with ciano farmer

J-shoes mostly makes interesting shoes and boots, including some pretty crazy (make-you-go-hmmm) stuff. Here's a beginning to their foray into sneakers, and it's pretty fun. They joined with Ciano Farmer (raw denim) to make a boot-like set of kicks for the stylish among you...

I also like their co-lab boot...You can check the Ciano Farmer website for details, but they start in a men's 8.

Sneaker Design School, An Occupational Hazard

The day I spent my student loan….
One of the pleasures of research was a store visit that lasted three days, made by chance, to the legendary Sports and Things, as featured way back in Sneaker Freaker.

As I stepped off the bus I was horrified at the sight of CLOSING DOWN SALE, I even broke out into hot sweats like a post-menopausal lady. What met me the other side of the door was a sight for saw eyes. There were piles of trainers on tables, boxes scattered about the place and more rails of discount mis-fit clothing than a charity shop.

I pulled my jaw off the floor and made a move towards the store manager.
The manager, big up your chest sir, claims to have the Holy Grail of basketball trainers- he even had the pictures of them on his phone! Seriously guys, sexism for being a femalesneakerfiend? That’s bull, if anything it’s surprisingly easy to bond over leather, laces and gum soles. I had a personal shopping experience with a guided tour of the 3 HUGE stock rooms.
I bought more than I could carry, had to go back the next day and ended up repeating the spending mayhem…
So normally this would be a sign of obsessive sole sickness, but actually I’m one of the few that can genuinely say this many trainers in ownership will help me. Yes that’s right, each purchase was necessary, even on a parallel to finding next months rent.

Admittedly when I arrived on the third day, I was handed the previous purchases and told sternly no more, little did they know they already had most of my student loan for the term.

Not just an expensive shopping trip?
The visit was a quest to talk to the store manager about retail and the trainer market. Store managers have a good overview of what is selling and who’s buying it, as well as dealing with customer feedback. They are, in a way on the front line of retail, and have direct contact with the consumer.
This all counts towards primary research.
As a designer you have to look at what’s already been created, and who is buying it.
You need to be aware, so the product can be improved and offer the customer something new.
It’s also an area to draw inspiration. Past, present and if you’ve got the links, future designs allow you to reflect on the fine balance of a great creation and a mighty monster.

A few golden oldies that I can’t take my eyes off

I wanna give a Shout out...

Shout out to the Ladies of Black Mamba for sending me these awesome shirts!!!!

My most recent purchase

Last Thursday as I was shopping for Christmas gifts at Queens Center Mall, I decided to go into Pulse and look at some sneakers. And I came across this beauty. I figured hey its time to spice up my sneaker life with a different color and these stood out to me. I asked for some assistance and luckily they carried big kids sizes for this shoe I tried on a 6.5 they fit fine but then I saw the Price Tag $100.00. I said to myself a hundred dollars for some dunks low tops at that I said no thanks I won't be taking these and left. After I left I kept thinking about this sneaker all week and finally I said to myself there has to be a decent price on these so yesterday I took the Q20 bus down to Jamaica Ave. what a good choice I made. I went right down the block to the Coliseum Mall And walked into one of my favorite sneaker spots, called Sneaker King. They had this shoe and in big kid sizes as well and sold it to me for $75.00. Its always good to know that I can count on Jamaica Ave for some kicks. Pics:

My favorite sneaker of 2007

Well, Woody over at our favorite sneaker rag, Sneaker Freaker, asked me to write about my favorite sneaker of 2007 for the end of 2007 ish #11. I had a few I really loved, and many I truly coveted, but I finally narrowed it down to one. I sent in my text, he said he liked it, and the rest is history, on the shelves as we speak! Oops, not really. Turns out that Jesse from Alife also liked his (own) shoe best. So he got to do the piece...why? Cuz he actually designed the brilliant shoe? Cuz he gave Woody some beautiful pairs? Cuz he's cuter than me? Who knows...but here's my piece anyways! And, Jesse, congrats man. It's a great shoe.

Alife, alife, alife. The words play over and over the shoe. If you had told me I’d be loving some sneakers with Alife written all over them, I’da kept my ipod on and kept steppin’. I like Alife, but it just sounds tacky. And fluorescent stripes? Nah, sounds a little too chipper for me.

Well, let me eat my words. These are beautiful! First, the Puma First Round is simply a classic, with its handsome, low slung silhouette. But this Alife model goes way beyond that, topping the charts with a whole new look. The raised glossy letters pile on top of each other, serving as an eye-catching design element rather than the tacky ad that could have resulted from a poor rendition of this bold idea. And keeping with the bold, the puma stripes aren’t just fluorescent, aren’t just patent leather, but are also four different colors. (I love asymmetrical sneakers…)

Personally, I think bright colors got worn out this year, overplayed like a good pop song, in a way that makes you sad cuz you used to like it. But this pair did it right. They didn’t drown the shoe in fluorescent, but kept the design a slick white or black, and then popped it with the stripes and laces. Of course beautiful colors and textures are becoming the soundtrack over at Puma these days. The Bodes, the YO Raps, the Size? States…music to my ears! Ilikeit. I likeit. Ilikeit.

Female sneaker customizing on TV

I just found this on our girl Fetti's new blog:

"Hey! This week I will be a guest on a rising cable show Urban Wall Street discussing my passion for kicks, customizing, being a female in the sneaker game, and how upcoming customizers can do what I do! If you're in NYC it will air Wednesday 12/20 @ 9:30am, and Thursday 12/21 @ 7am for the early birdies on channel 68! Be sure to check it out then, if not, I will post when it will be on once I get the details! Thanks for the love!"
